Aerococcus urinae is a rare organism infrequently isolated from cultures. Mostly known to cause urinary tract infection, it can cause bacteremia leading to severe urosepsis and infective endocarditis. Embolization is frequently reported with Aerococcus urinae endocarditis (AUE); hence, the presentation is highly variable.

Several other species in the Aerococcus genus have been identified, including the pathogenic A. sanguinicola and the less-pathogenic A. christensenii and A. urinaehominus [ 3 - 5 ]. While rarely recognized in the past, A. urinae has become more commonly isolated in bacterial cultures, as bacterial detection has improved [ 6 ]. This report describes the clinical sources and phenotypic characterization of 16 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola . Sixteen conventional tests were used to describe and differentiate the 16 isolates of A. sanguinicola from 30 strains of Aerococcus viridans , 27 strains of Aerococcus urinae , and a single strain each of Aerococcus christensenii and Aerococcus urinaehominis . Aerococcus sanguinicola is sensitive to most antibiotics likely to be used for empirical treatment of septicaemia such as β-lactams and vancomycin . However, A sanguinicola has often reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones [1, 3, 5].

Treatment options are therefore important.
